About a year ago I started looking more and more into the minimalist lifestyle. What caught my eye first was the idea of a capsule wardrobe. Carl and I had our clothes in 3 different closets, were using 2 large dressers and it all just felt cluttered. I hate clutter, so we started with our clothes. I had clothes from high school, clothes I'd never wear again but just miiiight need for a costume or something at some point, right?? Is this sounding familiar to any of you? Hopefully I'm not the only one! I went through all of our clothes, trying on and really thinking when the last time was I wore each piece. Two full garbage bags later, a couple donation trips to DI and a few trips to share some with friends and I was addicted!
I'm not someone who gets attached to things much so this sort of purging is not draining or emotional to me, it's more freeing and I feel like I can breathe easier! We didn't stop there, we decided to go through cupboards, the kitchen, toys and even down to craft supplies. The minimalist home decor style is totally up our alley as well. I love the simple clean lines, everything has its place, lots of neutral tones and I feel like it helps me pick and choose only my absolute favorite pieces to include. Fresh plants are my absolute favorite to decorate with, I don't think you can have too many! I love that they serve multiple purposes as well... decoration, purifying the air and they are just relaxing.
When our house feels cluttered, my life feels cluttered and that is no good for anyone! I feel like if we have too much stuff lying around I'm constantly "picking up" but still setting myself for a mess later if it's all still lying around. Just get rid of the excess, no doubt you will love the feeling too! If you haven't looked into minimalism yet I encourage you to do so. I think everyone can benefit from this type of clean out! As silly as it sounds, having less has made my life feel more full simply because it all makes sense as to why I held onto it.
If you want to do a little reading, or listening in my case (I love audio books!), then order Marie Kondo's The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying up and I promise you it will do just that, change your life! It completely changed the way I thought about the things I had around my house, highly recommend it! Do I follow the book exactly, every detail? No. But I do love her thought process and she has some great points I've never thought of!
